Poromiehen Leuku (“the reindeer herder’s knife”) is the largest knife in our Lapland collection.
The handle is made of birch and treated with linseed oil to provide a secure grip and prevent slipping, even when wet. The blade is blackened from the quenching process and made of high-quality carbon steel, which makes for an extremely sharp edge that is also easy to sharpen. However, it requires regular maintenance: always clean, dry, and oil the blade after use, and never leave it wet in the sheath.
The Poromiehen Leuku Knife is designed for larger tasks and is not suitable for carving. It is intended as a chopping tool for clearing brush, cutting firewood, and preparing kindling for campfires.
The knife is secured with rivets through the blade’s tang, and these rivets are further reinforced with TIG-welded steel plates to ensure the blade does not detach. The rivet connection is hidden under a silver-plated bolster on the knife’s end.
The sheath, made from vegetable-tanned cowhide, features Sámi-inspired decoration. It is available in two colors: traditional natural light or dark brown. The sheath has a belt loop, and the weight of the leuku ensures a snug fit, preventing the knife from slipping out.
Due to its weight, the Poromiehen Leuku is not ideal for carrying on long hikes. For those who prefer low maintenance over the sharpest cutting edge, a version with a stainless steel blade and lacquered handle is also available.
The blade length of the Poromiehen Leuku is 19 cm, and the total length of the knife is 30 cm.
Poromiehen Leuku is also available as a double-knife set, named the Tuplaleuku, which pairs this larger knife with the Jätkänvuolu.
