Aito Ystävä Knife

Traditional Aito Knife with inlaid heart

Aito Ystävä – the name of this knife means “true friend” in Finnish. It is our special Valentine's Day model, based on the beautifully crafted and highly popular birch-bark-handled Aito Knife. A heart motif is delicately embedded into the handle using a traditional technique called "sorkoupotus."

Product info

The Aito Knife is one of our best-selling models year after year. It’s an all-purpose knife suitable for hiking, hunters, and anyone in need of a versatile tool.

The heart motif on the Aito Ystävä is made from 0.12 mm brass sheet, cut into 5 mm wide strips. These strips are carefully shaped into a heart using pliers and tweezers, and then gently hammered into the birch bark handle. Afterward, the handle is finely sanded so the inlay is flush with the surface, making it smooth to the touch. Just like the original Aito-puukko, the handle is treated with linseed oil, giving it a pleasant feel and a non-slip grip, even when wet.

The sheath for this special edition is available in either dark brown or black. The blade is an 8 cm carbon steel blade with a blackened finish that results from the heat treatment process, not from any added coloring or surface finish – only the edge is polished on a whetstone.

Since the heart motifs are handmade, each one is unique, and the exact shape and placement of the heart near the top of the knife may vary slightly from what is shown in photos.

The carbon steel blade requires regular maintenance. It should always be cleaned and dried after use, and a thin layer of oil will best protect it from corrosion. We recommend leaving the knife outside of its sheath for a day or two after use to allow both the blade and the sheath to fully dry. At the factory, we protect the blades with a tar-scented CRC Sisu protective oil. Other options like WD-40 or CRC 5-56 work well, too. If using the knife with food, it's best to protect the blade with a food-safe oil, such as sunflower oil. Keep in mind that food oils are not suitable for long-term storage, as they can become sticky over time.
