The Scout Knife is the medium-sized model in the series, featuring a signature polished carbon steel blade with a length of 12 cm. The handle is made from stacked leather discs, which are ground and lacquered for a smooth finish. Both ends of the handle are capped with polished aluminum bolsters, with the lower bolster serving as a finger guard. The sheath is hand-stitched from light brown leather, reinforced with polished stainless steel at both the tip and the mouth. The sheath's decoration is pressed into the leather for a classic finish.
The Scout Knife was first introduced in 1925 after being designed at the request of British scouts who wanted an internationally recognizable knife model suited for scouts worldwide. It was designed with a sturdy finger guard and a shape distinct from traditional Nordic knives. The sheath was also equipped with a safety feature to prevent the knife from falling out.
The shape of the polished carbon steel blade was inspired by traditional American designs. The handle is constructed from surplus leather discs left over from sheath production, using high-quality Finnish vegetable-tanned cowhide. The blade is separated from the handle by a 3 mm thick aluminum guard, which prevents fingers from slipping onto the blade. The upper pommel, featuring a hook design, is made from cast aluminum and was derived from the 1921 Whittle Knife model.
The hand-stitched sheath is made from natural, undyed Finnish vegetable-tanned leather. It has metal reinforcements at both the tip and the mouth. A snap-fastened leather strap at the top ensures the knife stays securely in the sheath. The sheath is also decorated with a subtle traditional pattern in the same color as the leather.
The Scout Knife is available in four different sizes, all with the same handle and sheath design, but with blades of varying lengths. The medium-sized Scout Knife is suitable for users of all ages and for various activities, from camping and hiking to hunting and setting up camp. It is versatile enough for both young and adult users.
The overall length of the Scout Knife is 24 cm, with the knife itself measuring 23 cm and the blade 12 cm.
Maintenance
The carbon steel blade requires regular care to prevent corrosion. After each use, it should be cleaned and dried, and a protective oil layer should be applied to prevent rust. We recommend leaving the knife outside the sheath for a day or two after use to allow both the knife and the sheath to dry completely. At the factory, we coat the blades with CRC Sisu protective oil, though alternatives such as WD-40 or CRC 5-56 are also suitable. For food preparation, it is best to use food-safe oils like sunflower oil, but food oils should not be used for long-term storage as they can become sticky over time.
Scout knives, in particular, are prone to corrosion because the sheath's leather is in direct contact with both sides of the blade. If the knife is stored in the sheath while wet, black spots will form on the blade, which will eventually turn to rust. Although these spots don’t affect the knife's functionality, they can be removed using metal polish, such as Autosol.
